The Legacy of the Raniszeski Family

Redford Topsoil’s story began in 1957 when the Raniszeski family farm at Joy Rd. and Beech Daly was sold to make way for a new subdivision. Leonard and Edward Raniszeski saw an opportunity to repurpose the farm’s rich soil, and thus, Raney Bros Topsoil was born. At the time, there were only two topsoil companies in Metro Detroit, and Raney Bros quickly established itself as a trusted name in the industry.

Leonard Raniszeski Sr. took sole ownership of the company and worked tirelessly to grow the business until his passing in 1982. His son, Leonard Raniszeski Jr., carried on the legacy, dedicating 50 years to building Redford Topsoil into a household name for topsoil sales and services. With hard work and a deep commitment to quality, the company thrived through all economic conditions, serving countless customers across Metro Detroit.

In 2025, Leonard Raniszeski Jr. retired after decades of success, entrusting Redford Topsoil to Merlo Construction – a company with a legacy of craftsmanship spanning three generations. Founded in 1991 by brothers Perry and Ray Merlo, Merlo Construction has grown into a leading construction company specializing in demolition, earthwork, utilities, concrete foundations, and more.

Together, we are dedicated to continuing the trusted legacy of Redford Topsoil while expanding operations to better serve Metro Detroit with premium topsoil solutions.
